Retaining Wall Policy

Consultation has concluded

Consultation on the Retaining Wall Policy has now closed. Thank you to everyone who participated - your comments/photos have been noted.

Council has developed a Retaining Wall Policy to provide consistency around the management of retaining walls within Council's road reserve and/or property. We'd like you to look at the draft policy to make sure it is easy to understand. Click here to view the policy.

Why have a Retaining Wall Policy?

Across the City of Glenorchy there are more than 55 retaining walls. Some are within the road reserve, others are on or adjoining Council property. Council has built some of the retaining walls. Others have been built privately by owners and/or residents. In other cases lack of historical information makes it difficult to determine who built the wall, who owns it and who is responsible for its maintenance.

The Retaining Wall Policy defines the criteria for identifying the ownership and maintenance responsibility for all existing retaining walls which are wholly or partially with Council's road reserves and properties. The Policy will also apply to walls constructed as part of future developments, giving everyone a clear understanding of ownership and responsibilities.

When Council is approached by residents and potential purchasers seeking clarification, or raising concerns about retaining walls, the Policy will provide clear and consistent guidance of the ownership and associated responsibilities to both Council officers and the public.

Is the Policy easy to understand?

The criteria within the Policy are based on extensive research and technical assessments and are not negotiable. However we invite you to look at the draft Retaining Wall Policy and tell us whether the information is clear and easy to understand. Is the Policy easy to read? Do you understand the criteria? Is there anything missing? Anything that would make it easier to read?

Please provide your feedback by completing the survey below, or take the quick poll.

We'll use your feedback to ensure the Policy is easy for everyone to understand.

Does the Policy cover the retaining wall near me?

Use the mapping tool below to see the location of the 55 walls Council has identified. Is there a retaining wall near you that's not on the map? It may not be on Council managed land and/or it may be privately owned. Drop a pin to make a comment and we'll check it out.
