Main Road Moonah Parklet Trial

Moonah Main Road Parklet Trial

Glenorchy City Council is planning streetscape improvements to Main Road, Moonah as part of the upgrades identified in the Moonah CBD Precinct Plan. The project aims to create a more attractive, welcoming and family-friendly main street that supports local businesses and strengthens Moonah’s identity as a local activity centre.

In 2020, Glenorchy City Council undertook extensive community engagement to develop a shared vision for the Moonah CBD. The outcomes of this process informed the Moonah CBD Precinct Plan.

Further consultation was undertaken by Inspiring Place in August 2025. During this process, local businesses along the Main Road strip were approached to gather ideas and identify opportunities for future streetscape improvements.

As part of this consultation, the potential introduction of parklets was explored as a tactical trial initiative. Businesses were asked what improvements could bring positive change to Main Road, what parklets might look like along the street, and how they could contribute to a more vibrant and sociable main street.

Following positive feedback from local traders, Glenorchy City Council re-engaged Inspiring Place to develop a concept design for a parklet trial. The concept design will be informed through further consultation with key stakeholders, local businesses and the broader community.

What are parklets?

Parklets are small public spaces created as extensions of the footpath at selected locations. They provide places for people to sit, gather and spend time, and typically include seating, greenery and space for informal social interaction.

By introducing small pockets of seating and planting, parklets can help bring life and activity to main streets. They provide opportunities for people to pause, meet friends or enjoy nearby cafés and shops, helping to make the street more comfortable, lively and welcoming.

In many cities, parklets are introduced as temporary or trial installations. This allows councils and communities to test new ideas, observe how the space is used, and gather feedback from businesses, visitors and residents before considering longer-term changes.

Recent examples of parklets in Tasmania include installations on Elizabeth Street (Midtown) and Collins Street in Hobart.

Where will the parklets be located?

The concept design proposes two parklets located at either side of the Main Road strip between Albert Road and Hopkins Street in Moonah.

The approximate locations were identified through consultation with local businesses in 2025 and through consideration of several factors, including:

  • existing parking provision
  • pedestrian movement and safety
  • infrastructure and asset maintenance requirements
  • operational and management considerations.

Exact locations and dimensions will be determined through further consultation with key stakeholders.

How will the concept design be developed?

The concept design will be developed through a co-design process involving key Council staff and local businesses located within the project area who may be directly affected by the proposed parklets.

Following this stage, the draft concept design will be shared with the broader community via Let’s Talk Glenorchy, where community members will be invited to provide feedback and suggestions.

All feedback received will be reviewed and used to refine the concept design before it is presented to Glenorchy City Council for consideration.

How can I share my thoughts?

The engagement process will take place in two stages, providing several opportunities for local businesses, visitors and community members to share their ideas.

Engagement Stage 1: Co-design with local businesses - May 2026 (Current Stage)

The first stage will focus on early input from local businesses and property owners within the project area.

During this stage:

  • Businesses located near the proposed changes will be contacted by Inspiring Place to provide input into the concept design.
  • Other businesses along the project area will also be invited to provide feedback on the draft concept design.

Engagement Stage 2: Community feedback - June – July 2026

The draft concept design will be published on Let’s Talk Glenorchy to gather feedback from the wider Glenorchy community.

Feedback received during this stage will help inform the refinement of the concept design.
