Main Road Moonah Parklet Trial
About the Project
Glenorchy City Council is exploring opportunities to improve the amenity and attractiveness of Main Road, Moonah through a proposed parklet trial.
The project forms part of the improvements identified in the Moonah CBD Precinct Plan and aims to create a more attractive, welcoming and family-friendly main street that supports local businesses and strengthens Moonah’s identity as a local activity centre.
In 2020, Glenorchy City Council undertook extensive community engagement to develop a shared vision for the Moonah CBD. The outcomes of this process informed the Moonah CBD Precinct Plan.
Further consultation was undertaken in 2025 with businesses along Main Road to identify opportunities for future streetscape improvements. As part of this consultation, the potential introduction of parklets was explored as a tactical trial initiative. Businesses were asked what improvements could bring positive change to Main Road, what parklets might look like along the street, and how they could contribute to a more vibrant and sociable main street.
Following this feedback, Glenorchy City Council engaged Inspiring Place to prepare a draft concept design for a parklet trial.
Council is now seeking feedback from the broader community on the draft concept design.
What are parklets?
Parklets are small public spaces created as extensions of the footpath at selected locations. They provide places for people to sit, gather and spend time, and typically include seating, greenery and space for informal social interaction.
By introducing small pockets of seating and planting, parklets can help bring life and activity to main streets. They provide opportunities for people to pause, meet friends or enjoy nearby cafés and shops, helping to make the street more comfortable, lively and welcoming.
In many cities, parklets are introduced as temporary or trial installations. This allows councils and communities to test new ideas, observe how the space is used, and gather feedback from businesses, visitors and residents before considering longer-term changes.
Recent examples of parklets in Tasmania include installations on Elizabeth Street (Midtown) and Collins Street in Hobart.

Where will the parklets be located?
The draft concept design proposes two parklets located at either side of the Main Road strip between Albert Road and Hopkins Street in Moonah.
The locations were identified through consultation with local businesses, and through consideration of several factors, including:
- existing parking provision
- pedestrian movement and safety
- infrastructure and asset maintenance requirements
- operational and management considerations.
How was the draft concept design developed?
The draft concept design will be developed through a collaborative design process involving key Council staff and local businesses located within the project area.
Businesses located adjacent to the proposed parklet locations were invited to participate in face-to-face meetings to discuss the draft concept design and identify further opportunities, concerns and operational considerations. Additional feedback on the draft concept design was also sought from businesses located within the broader project area.
Feedback received through this process informed refinement of the draft concept design prior to broader community consultation.
Have your say
Council is now seeking feedback from the wider community on the draft concept design.
We would like to hear your thoughts on:
- the proposed parklet locations
- the design and layout of the parklets
- opportunities the parklets may create for Main Road
- any concerns or considerations that should be taken into account
Feedback received during this stage will be reviewed and considered as part of the ongoing refinement of the concept design before it is presented to Council for consideration.
