Draft Glenorchy Parking Plan
We want your feedback on the Draft Glenorchy Parking Plan which is now open for feedback from Monday, 18 August to Monday, 15 September 2025.
Let’s talk parking in Glenorchy.
Glenorchy is changing and so are the ways people live, travel, and park. As Glenorchy grows, we want to make sure our parking requirements work for everyone—residents, businesses, and visitors—while making the most of our urban land. We have analysed parking across our key areas to find ways to make it more flexible, fair, and suited to local needs.
The Draft Glenorchy Parking Plan aims to:
Set fair, location-based parking requirements for new usage and development, replacing the one-size-fits-all State Planning Provisions in the Tasmanian Planning Scheme.
Encourage housing and business growth near public transport by reducing minimum parking requirements where appropriate.
Support sustainable travel choices by matching parking supply to actual demand; informed by national and local data, and encourage people to walk, cycle, and use public transport.
Save time and costs for developers by providing clear, measured standards that reduce reliance on performance criteria in the planning scheme.
Offer a cash-in-lieu option where appropriate for non-residential planning applications that cannot provide the required number of on-site parking spaces, with funds reinvested into public parking and transport improvements.
Make better use of urban land by avoiding oversupply of parking and supporting a walkable and transit-oriented city.
The draft Glenorchy Parking Plan applies to areas near public transport including the business areas in Glenorchy, Moonah, and Claremont, the Northern Apartments Corridor, and multiple dwellings and apartments in General and Inner Residential zones.
