During 2022 Glenorchy City Council reviewed its Dog Management Policy.
Under the Dog Control Act 2000, Council is required to have a Dog Management Policy. This policy includes information on how to be a responsible dog owner, information on dog fees and lets the community know the areas of Glenorchy that dogs are allowed on or off lead, or not allowed at all.
We review the policy every five years, and the time has come to review it again. So using the options listed below, please let us know your thoughts!
Where can I see the Draft Dog Management Policy?
The draft policy, as well as a tracked changes version, can be found on the right hand side of this page. Alternatively, if you just want to see the draft, CLICK HEREto be taken straight to it.
What's changed in the Draft Policy?
A few things have been updated in the draft policy. All are able to be seen in the tracked changes version available on the right hand side of this page, however notable changes are:
Declared Dog Exercise Areas –
To coincide with the requirements and terminology of The Act, most Prohibited Areas from the Dog Management Policy 2017 have been changed to Restricted Exercise Areas. Prohibited Areas only relate to areas that dogs are not allowed due to sensitive wildlife. Restricted Areas include areas that are restricted at some, or at all times, for any other reason.
A significant number of inclusions have been made due to previously declared areas not being included in the Dog Management Policy 2017 list.
An inclusion of a Council Property ID (PID) for easier identification.
Assistance Dogs –
Earlier this year Council moved a motion to include all Assistance Dogs for registration purposes, rather than solely Guide and Hearing Dogs, which The Act is yet to do. In this draft, we have made allowance for the owners of these Assistance Dogs to access Council declared Restricted Areas, as well as Guide and Hearing Dogs.
Greyhound Specified Exercise Area –
Council has identified that this is a point of interest for the community, but that there is much more work to be done outside of this policy to progress this. We are therefore making a commitment in the policy to investigate possible areas and considerations.
Specified Dog Training Area –
Similar to the Greyhound Specified Exercise Area, this was a point of interest for the community that requires further investigation, which is committed to in the draft.
Dangerous Dogs Registration Category –
To better reflect the understanding that dangerous dogs require extra resourcing by Council to monitor and enforce, the draft has included a new registration fee for dangerous dogs.
Other than the above wording/classification changes to the draft policy, no physical changes are proposed to the current declared areas. All currently declared areas are proposed to continue as they were previously utilised.
Stage 2 consultation closed Friday 28 January 2022 - thank you to everyone who provided feedback.
