Review of GCC Animal Management By-Law
Thank you for your contribution to the review of the GCC Animal Management By-Law. This engagement is now closed - please keep an eye on the page for updates.
What's this all about?
Glenorchy City Council's Animal Management By-Law is due for review. As part of the review process, Council is seeking community feedback on its proposed draft By-Law.
What is an Animal Management By-Law?
Animal Management By-Laws are laws made by local government councils, that set rules about controlling animals, and how and where people can keep different animals (e.g. bees, pigs, chickens, horses and cattle). By-laws also set penalties that can be issued to an owner who breaks these rules.
What about dogs?
Dogs are predominantly covered by Tasmania's Dog Control Act 2000, so these By-Laws focus on other animals that residents own and keep.
What about Cats?
The draft Animal Management By-law has been designed to address concerns about cats that are creating issues by roaming and attacking. The Cat Management Act 2009 governs the microchipping, desexing and allowed number of cats.
Current Draft
Council's Animal Management Officers have worked with our legal team, as well as a number of other internal stakeholders, to commence the review. These officers have reached out to a number of animal organisations in the community to seek feedback for the development of an initial draft, that is now available for community engagement.
