The planning controls for Prince of Wales Bay are under review for a potential amendment. A proposed new Specific Area Plan (SAP) will prioritise marine and advanced manufacturing uses, improve streetscape and worker amenity, and help protect the Derwent Estuary from development impacts.

The area is an important marine industry and innovation hub. In 2021 Council endorsed the Prince of Wales Bay Marine and Innovation Masterplan, which was developed in consultation with industry and government stakeholders.

The Masterplan aims to boost the growth of the marine industry and advanced manufacturing sector. The proposed new planning controls address strategic planning actions identified in the Masterplan.

Rezoning of one site, at 2 Innovation Drive, from a Community Purpose Zone to a Light Industrial Zone, is also proposed.
